Pregnancy books can sometimes be overwhelming and not all that helpful, with advice and opinions that might not resonate with natural-minded moms. By contrast, local mom and postpartum support coach Kristy Rodriguez has come out with a helpful and supportive new book, Pure Nurture: A Holistic Guide to a Healthy Baby. The guide provides wisdom and guidance for expectant moms with an eye toward self-care for a healthy pregnancy and beyond to set the stage for a healthy recovery and healthy parenting for years to come.

Surviving Snowzilla: an argument for self-care!

Today marks the fifth day children around Metro DC have been home from school for the snow in what is being called Snowzilla 2016. Where I live, school has already been called off for tomorrow, effectively making this experience a seven-day weekend! No on was surprised about the amount of snow, but the slowness of some counties to get their plows to neighborhoods has been filling my Facebook feed. Other frequent posts by parents? References to wine and coffee. Here’s the story of how I’ve managed a little better this year than with previous snowstorms. Read More

Meet contributor Alexandra Hughes

Alexandra Hughes of In Essence Coaching has made it her life’s work to help moms feel calm and grounded. A mom of three in D.C., Alexandria has been leading Calm Mom coaching circles at lil omm yoga studio in Tenley. She recently led a webinar titled “Ditch Overwhelm” webinar that I’m grateful I was able to make, and she is about to launch online Calm Mom Coaching Circles.

After the recent webinar, Alexandra and I spoke about the dovetailing interests of her coaching practice and Mindful Healthy Life to help parents find ways to be present and connected with their families. We’re excited to announce that Alexandra will be coming on board as a guest poster and eventually a regular contributor to Mindful Healthy Life. Get to know her in this Q&A! Read More

Moms speak out: what Mother’s Day really means (+ giveaway)

For lots of us, Mother’s Day brings more than a bouquet of organic roses; it brings up a lot of emotion about our role as daughter, mother, partner and more. Other than Scary Mommy.com‘s hilarious take on what mothers really want, most of the emails I saw about the day from blogs and businesses were beyond cheery. If I watched commercial TV, I expect I might have been overwhelmed by images of silk and sweets. The richness and complexity of this day often isn’t given adequate space. Read More
