Expert panel addresses findings on health impacts of screen time on children

The National Press Club hosted an Interdisciplinary Summit on Children and Screen Time November 1 with several pediatric media experts who have been involved in the first-ever special supplement to the journal Pediatrics on the issue of children and screen time. The non-profit organization Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development convened the summit and sponsored the Pediatrics supplement.

Third National Kids Yoga Conference is almost here!

The National Kids Yoga Conference is returning to DC for its third year September 30 to October 2. A weekend of programming for adults bringing yoga and mindfulness to the next generation, the conference includes discussions, presentations and hands-on breakout sessions and inspiring keynotes with speakers sharing experiences and research about the impact of yoga and mindfulness training on children’s health, wellness and readiness to learn. NoVA Outside promotes outdoor learning with two fall events

NoVA Outside is an alliance of environmental educators that promotes outdoor learning. This fall the group is hosting two events: a happy hour and resource fair on September 16 to connect educators of school-age children to resources for outdoor learning and an early childhood conference on October 1 that will inspire educators of young children and give them the tools to develop a robust outdoor program. Update 9/28/16: The October 1 conference has been postponed until March. Hundreds Learn at 5th Annual School Environmental Action Showcase

The fifth annual NoVA Outside School Environmental Action Showcase (SEAS) brought over 500 students from public schools, private schools and homeschooling groups in Ablemarle County, Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, and Falls Church to George Mason University to learn and share about environmental stewardship. The event, which took place on April 6, 2016, was put on in partnership with George Mason University Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center. and GMU’s Office of Sustainability. Tell EPA to address safety requirements for toxic chemical exposure

Parents have an important opportunity to make our voices heard and to protect our communities from chemical disasters. In 2013, 15 people were killed and hundreds more injured when a chemical plant exploded in the town of West, Texas. Since then, hundreds of other communities have been affected by explosions, fires, and toxic leaks, but no new safety requirements have been put in place.

Finally, this Tuesday March 29th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a long-awaited hearing to discuss a safety rule for chemical facilities. Let’s make sure it’s strong enough to protect our communities.  Read More
