Surviving Snowzilla: an argument for self-care!

Today marks the fifth day children around Metro DC have been home from school for the snow in what is being called Snowzilla 2016. Where I live, school has already been called off for tomorrow, effectively making this experience a seven-day weekend! No on was surprised about the amount of snow, but the slowness of some counties to get their plows to neighborhoods has been filling my Facebook feed. Other frequent posts by parents? References to wine and coffee. Here’s the story of how I’ve managed a little better this year than with previous snowstorms. Read More

Safe Personal Care Products for Your Family

Did you know that the United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938? The European Union has spent the past two decades banning or restricting more than 1,300 ingredients and the US has only banned 11 to date. Decades of studies indicate that health issues (such as asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise due in some part to our exposure to toxic chemicals. Currently, approximately only 10% of the 10,000 chemicals found in personal care products have safety data. Read More

Ditching Overwhelm: A first step toward health in the New Year

As moms who aspire towards mindful healthy living, we work hard to eat healthy food, to exercise, to be responsible consumers. When it comes to detoxifying, we naturally think of cleansing our bodies and doing our utmost to keep a clean and healthy environment.

But if we take a closer look at what holistic really means, we see that holistic detoxification is something that goes deeper than this. A holistic detox is one that must consider mind as well as body. Read More

Meet contributor Alexandra Hughes

Alexandra Hughes of In Essence Coaching has made it her life’s work to help moms feel calm and grounded. A mom of three in D.C., Alexandria has been leading Calm Mom coaching circles at lil omm yoga studio in Tenley. She recently led a webinar titled “Ditch Overwhelm” webinar that I’m grateful I was able to make, and she is about to launch online Calm Mom Coaching Circles.

After the recent webinar, Alexandra and I spoke about the dovetailing interests of her coaching practice and Mindful Healthy Life to help parents find ways to be present and connected with their families. We’re excited to announce that Alexandra will be coming on board as a guest poster and eventually a regular contributor to Mindful Healthy Life. Get to know her in this Q&A! Read More

5 Steps to Mindful Holiday Eating

With the holidays upon us, it is easy to get derailed from our normal healthy eating habits and eat mindlessly. We’ve all been there: you sit down at a party or an event with family and friends, you arrive hungry, and you start nibbling on appetizers. Before you know it, you’re stuffed full of snacks! Or you’re in such a hurry to get to work, you scarf down breakfast behind the wheel. Or you’re so busy feeding your kids dinner that you end up eating their scraps.

When you eat mindlessly, not only do you consume more calories than you need, but you also miss out on simply enjoying the meal. Let’s face it, when you eat in an unconscious state with no awareness of food, are you really even tasting it?

Transition comes to Tenley: lil omm closes studio, moves its yoga programs

Yoga-loving families in Metro D.C. learned on Monday that Tenleytown’s lil omm yoga studio is closing its doors at the end of the year, but owner Pleasance Silicki does not want them to have heavy hearts. She is, in fact, really exited about the next phase of life for the community she founded in 2009. Read More

Exercises to Heal Postpartum Muscular Imbalances

A woman’s body undergoes many changes during pregnancy that linger after baby arrives.  Muscular imbalances contribute to the random aches and pains that creep up postpartum.  Many of these pains can be traced back to pelvis misalignment.

TRUE Fitness Studio Launches Give Back Program for Moms in Need

When I spoke with Nina Elliot about her vision for expanding TRUE Health & Wholeness wellness studio, she was excited to tell me about the new TRUE Gives Back Program to offer fitness and wellness services to moms who otherwise couldn’t afford them.

The long-term vision for the business she co-owns with her husband, Christian, is to change people’s ideas about health. “You don’t transform your world until you transform your city, your block,” Nina said. She and Christian, parents of three with a fourth due in November, wanted to effect change among local Arlington-area residents. They came up with the Give Back Program to invite people in the facility who might not otherwise enter because of the cost of personal or group training and wellness services. Read More
