Inspirational self-empowerment speaker Brie Mathers is in town sharing her “Love the Skin You’re In” presentation with girls in Arlington Public Schools. Her presentation helps girls understand how ideas of beauty are socially constructed and uses mindfulness tools to show them how to connect to their inner selves and to others in a way that nurtures their spirits.

Car Free Day September 22 and Bike and Walk to School October 5

Kids who see their parents making mindful decisions about transportation are more likely to grow up doing so themselves. The air quality in Washington DC and in nearby Virginia locales get an F for Ozone. Children are more susceptible to developing problems from pollution. Thursday, September 22 is Car Free Day. The folks at air quality leader Clean Air Partners and transportation network Commuter Connections are encouraging residents to take the Car Free Day pledge to get people ready for the big day! Third National Kids Yoga Conference is almost here!

The National Kids Yoga Conference is returning to DC for its third year September 30 to October 2. A weekend of programming for adults bringing yoga and mindfulness to the next generation, the conference includes discussions, presentations and hands-on breakout sessions and inspiring keynotes with speakers sharing experiences and research about the impact of yoga and mindfulness training on children’s health, wellness and readiness to learn. Conference registration has been extended through Thursday, September 29. Read More

NoVA Outside promotes outdoor learning with two fall events

NoVA Outside is an alliance of environmental educators that promotes outdoor learning. This fall the group is hosting two events: a happy hour and resource fair on September 16 to connect educators of school-age children to resources for outdoor learning and an early childhood conference on October 1 that will inspire educators of young children and give them the tools to develop a robust outdoor program. Update 9/28/16: The October 1 conference has been postponed until March. Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment Seeks Input on Vehicle Idling at Schools

Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment (ACE) is seeking input on vehicle idling in and around Arlington Public Schools’ (APS) facilities in an effort to promote cleaner air and better health for everyone, but most especially our children. This initiative will enable ACE to work with APS and other strategic partners on educational programming to reduce vehicle idling and improve air quality. Read More

Real Food for Kids to Host Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo March 12

The non-profit organization Real Food For Kids is hosting a Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo on Saturday, March 12 at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees at this free event can learn about food writing, promotion and photography, family meal planning, school gardening and school food. The Expo is an outreach program designed to educate students and their families on making healthier lifestyle choices, and ensuring access to real whole foods for all school children. Read More

School Gardens gain momentum in Arlington Public Schools

Since the April 2015 Growing Green Schools event, parents and school staff in Arlington Public Schools have made progress in school gardening efforts. Started in June 2015 and now running the first Monday of most months, the School Garden Meetups give parents, teachers, staff and community members an opportunity to share knowledge, discuss successes and challenges, and see different school garden and outdoor learning spaces around the county.

These are volunteer-led opportunities for interested parties to learn from one another about site-specific efforts around the county. In addition to this group, APS also has a Superintendent’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability, which was launched in 2012 with a team of volunteers from around the community. Now, there is new momentum toward funding a position to support all of these efforts. One of the just-released recommendations of the Science Advisory Committee is to “provide funding and support for one full-time Sustainability and Outdoor Learning Coordinator (SOLC) starting with the 2016-2017 school year.” Read More
