Alexandra Hughes of In Essence Coaching has made it her life’s work to help moms feel calm and grounded. A mom of three in D.C., Alexandria has been leading Calm Mom coaching circles at lil omm yoga studio in Tenley. She recently led a webinar titled “Ditch Overwhelm” webinar that I’m grateful I was able to make, and she is about to launch online Calm Mom Coaching Circles.

5 Steps to Mindful Holiday Eating

With the holidays upon us, it is easy to get derailed from our normal healthy eating habits and eat mindlessly. We’ve all been there: you sit down at a party or an event with family and friends, you arrive hungry, and you start nibbling on appetizers. Before you know it, you’re stuffed full of snacks! Or you’re in such a hurry to get to work, you scarf down breakfast behind the wheel. Or you’re so busy feeding your kids dinner that you end up eating their scraps.

When you eat mindlessly, not only do you consume more calories than you need, but you also miss out on simply enjoying the meal. Let’s face it, when you eat in an unconscious state with no awareness of food, are you really even tasting it?

Yoga-loving families in Metro D.C. learned on Monday that Tenleytown’s lil omm yoga studio is closing its doors at the end of the year, but owner Pleasance Silicki does not want them to have heavy hearts. Weston A. Price Foundation’s Sally Fallon Morell on Traditional Eating

Hearing Sally Fallon Morell‘s talk about traditional diets at the Weston A. Price Foundation‘s Wise Traditions conference was a turning point in my health, nutrition, and parenting journeys. Each year the organization headed by Fallon Morell brings together a thousand traditional foods enthusiasts to hear presentations about holistic health and wellness by speakers who are nationally recognized leaders in the field; to meet vendors and sample whole foods products; to eat delicious farm-fresh and locally-sourced meals — including bone broth on tap! — and to learn from one another. The large annual Wise Traditions conference moves to a different part of the country each year and will be in Anaheim, California November 13-16.

In addition to serving as the co-founder and president of the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) and the author of several books, Fallon Morell and her husband own P.A. Bowen Farmstead in Brandywine, Maryland, less than an hour from D.C. Available every Saturday morning by appointment are tours of the farm, which produces artisan cheese and raises grass-based livestock.

Giving ourselves the gift of grace on Mother’s Day

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s easy to feel challenged and maybe even a little cynical, especially if you’re feeling underappreciated or unsuccessful in parenting, or both. This is hard work, and there are really no promotions! I loved the pie graph of what moms really want for Mother’s Day at Babble.com and “What Moms Really Mean When they Say They Don’t Want Anything for Mother’s Day” from Scary Mommy. (Hint: they both talk a lot about sleep and not a lot about bling).

Inspiration abounds at first National Kids Yoga Conference

YogaKids DVD was the first television I allowed my son some seven years ago.  Since then, he and his little sister have been to a handful of kids and family yoga classes, and a day of yoga camp. This summer, my daughter had a delightful yoga birthday party at which her older brother showed off his knowledge of poses and Sanskrit phrases. They are not without some yoga knowledge.

But truth be told, though I try to practice daily on my own, yoga has remained something of an extra rather than an integral part of my parenting. It’s always there in the background in theory, but in practice, when I’m working so hard just to stay well by cooking all the time and am also staying involved in volunteer efforts whose higher goal is health and well-being for families, I don’t always ooze groundedness at home. I never have, anywhere. This really is a lifetime journey.

Enter the first National Kids Yoga Conference conference this past weekend! As if it weren’t inspiring enough just to interview the organizers, I emerged from the conference in awe of the many benefits of yoga for children and bowled over by the numerous strategies out there to make yoga accessible to young ones. It was truly transformative. I hope and believe that my parenting – my life – will never be the same.

First Kids Yoga Conference Comes to DC September 27

The organizers of the first National Kids Yoga Conference are moms who putting their mindfulness skills in practice with every step of planning toward the Saturday, September 27 event at George Washington University’s School of Public Health.

I’ve long admired the work and commitment of lil omm yoga studio owner Pleasance Silicki and Michelle Kelsey Mitchell, co-founder of the Alexandria-based non-profit organization YoKid. When I spoke with them about how they’ve managed to pull off such a huge endeavor, I got even more inspired.
