On Tuesday, April 25, NoVA Outside will put on its 6th annual School Environmental Action Showcase, or SEAS, at George Mason University. Whether you’re an early childhood educator, a parent or a grandparent, there are tremendous benefits to getting children outdoors in nature. This Saturday, NoVA Outside is organizing a half-day conference called “Getting Kids Outdoors in Nature: Making it Happen” to provide support, strategies, ideas and the reasoning behind getting outside that will inspire any adult working with young children.

Inspirational self-empowerment speaker Brie Mathers is in town sharing her “Love the Skin You’re In” presentation with girls in Arlington Public Schools. Her presentation helps girls understand how ideas of beauty are socially constructed and uses mindfulness tools to show them how to connect to their inner selves and to others in a way that nurtures their spirits.

Real Food for Kids is holding its 2017 Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo on Saturday, March 11 at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Participants will get to sample food from competing teams, enjoy a healthy lunch, hear a keynote by Fairfax County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Services Director Rodney Ford and participate in two workshop sessions. The ALF Educational Institute, a project of McLean’s Bronson Family Dentistry, is holding its first annual Interdisciplinary Health & Wellness Conference in Arlington March 24 and 25 to address many facets of dental health as they relate to whole body health. Lazure painting: The transformation of Potomac Crescent Waldorf School classrooms

Most parents want their children to feel calm, and the folks at Potomac Crescent Waldorf School have worked hard to create a peaceful, soothing environment in their new home at Fairlington Presbyterian with in Alexandria. Before the school moved into the space last fall, parents, staff and alumni transformed the classroom walls using a painting technique called lazure. Paired with the abundance of natural wood and textiles in Waldorf  classrooms, the skillfully painted soft peach walls help children and adults alike feel calm and grounded. Read More

NoVA Outside promotes outdoor learning with two fall events

NoVA Outside is an alliance of environmental educators that promotes outdoor learning. This fall the group is hosting two events: a happy hour and resource fair on September 16 to connect educators of school-age children to resources for outdoor learning and an early childhood conference on October 1 that will inspire educators of young children and give them the tools to develop a robust outdoor program. Update 9/28/16: The October 1 conference has been postponed until March. Details forthcoming.
