Mother’s Day 2016: Reflections from local moms

The day is almost here when people will be posting images on social media of flowers and chubby-cheeked hugs and all kinds of joy for Mother’s Day. When we are feeling awesome about our parenting and our daughtering, and when we’re feeling like our cups are full with support from loved ones, our community, or something greater, these images warm hearts. Sometimes, though, it’s hard to see past the laundry and runny noses and night wakings.

So, as in 2014, I asked some local moms who work with or on behalf of moms to share their reflections on this holiday. Some shared two years ago, and some I’ve only met since then. What I wanted to know was: What does Mother’s Day mean to you? How do you hope to celebrate it and how do you expect to celebrate it? Here’s what they had to say!

Celebrate a Happy & Healthy Halloween with Teal Pumpkin and other tips (+ giveaway!)

As parents, we look forward to watching our children choose their Halloween costumes and map out the best neighborhood houses to visit for candy. However, for some parents Halloween can also bring anxiety if their children have food allergies or sensitivities. The Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) TEAL Pumpkin Project is working to reduce that anxiety for families with food-related allergies in the D.C. Metro Area and across the country.

How to celebrate a safe 4th of July

Independence Day brings lots of great activities but also lots of opportunities to come into contact with toxins. Pregnant women and parents with young children might want to pay some extra attention to the additional toxins their little ones are exposed to at this time of year. While no one likes a Debbie Downer, being mindful of our health is not the same as denying yourself and your family a fun time. Getting sick is certainly no fun!

Most kids and adults can handle occasional treats, but toxins do accumulate in all of us. We know from the Environmental Working Group that babies are born now with over 200 chemicals in their umbilical cord blood, including BPA. Adults and children who are already compromised in some way or who have poor detoxification for genetic reasons, liver issues, or unhealthy diet would be served well by paying attention to their choices this holiday.

Although most things in moderation can be tolerated by most people, here are some of the issues those with young children and compromised systems might want to consider to stay safe and healthy.

Giving ourselves the gift of grace on Mother’s Day

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s easy to feel challenged and maybe even a little cynical, especially if you’re feeling underappreciated or unsuccessful in parenting, or both. This is hard work, and there are really no promotions! I loved the pie graph of what moms really want for Mother’s Day at Babble.com and “What Moms Really Mean When they Say They Don’t Want Anything for Mother’s Day” from Scary Mommy. (Hint: they both talk a lot about sleep and not a lot about bling).

Last year at this time, I ran a piece featuring local moms and their thoughts about the day. Recently, after reading something Joanna Eddy of the Holistic Mothering lactation consultant practice had to say about mommy self-judgment, I asked if she would elaborate in this year’s Mother’s Day guest post. Here are Joanna’s inspiring words: Read More
