Meet Jesse Straight, owner of Whiffletree Farm and father of five

Jesse Straight of Whiffletree Farm in Warrenton,  Virginia  is one of several area farmers who drive into DC and its suburbs to deliver goods direct to consumers at central locations. For those who like to buy local, to meet their farmers, and the use of sustainable farming methods, the farm drop route is becoming a popular alternative to supermarket shopping.

Straight is the father of five children aged one and a half to almost 8. Having been a happy customer of Whiffletree’s for several months, I asked Jesse to share with Mindful Healthy Life readers a little bit more about his farming practices, his business, and how both influence his parenting. Surviving Snowzilla: an argument for self-care!

Today marks the fifth day children around Metro DC have been home from school for the snow in what is being called Snowzilla 2016. Where I live, school has already been called off for tomorrow, effectively making this experience a seven-day weekend! No on was surprised about the amount of snow, but the slowness of some counties to get their plows to neighborhoods has been filling my Facebook feed. Other frequent posts by parents? References to wine and coffee. Here’s the story of how I’ve managed a little better this year than with previous snowstorms. Read More

The European Union has spent the past two decades banning or restricting more than 1,300 ingredients and the US has only banned 11 to date. Decades of studies indicate that health issues (such as asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise due in some part to our exposure to toxic chemicals. Currently, approximately only 10% of the 10,000 chemicals found in personal care products have safety data. Read More

Ditching Overwhelm: A first step toward health in the New Year

As moms who aspire towards mindful healthy living, we work hard to eat healthy food, to exercise, to be responsible consumers. When it comes to detoxifying, we naturally think of cleansing our bodies and doing our utmost to keep a clean and healthy environment.

But if we take a closer look at what holistic really means, we see that holistic detoxification is something that goes deeper than this. A holistic detox is one that must consider mind as well as body. Read More

Getting kids outside in winter

Even if this is a mild winter here in D.C., we’re still likely to have days when the school officials decide it’s too cold for kids to go outside to play. In fact, that’s already happened at my kids’ school! And yet, we all know that gross motor activity and connection to nature are super important for little beings, and really for all of us! So how to we make sure outdoor activity happens when temps our low? Read More
