Call for Winter Events & Gift Guide Items

It’s easy to tell from the cold morning temps that winter is on its way. With the end of Daylight Savings Time November 1, the days will be feeling a lot shorter. So even though the leaves are still gorgeously colorful here in Metro DC, it’s time to start thinking ahead to winter.

We here at Mindful Healthy Life are putting together a list of Winter Activities to appeal to healthy- and natural-minded families. Post outdoor activities, nature craft workshops, healthy living talks and demos and conferences in our calendar. Once they are there, we will add them to our compilation, and we just might share them on our Facebook page, too! If you have a list of a bunch of events, you can also send them to us so we can add them easily to our compilation.

As holidays and the New Year approach, we also want to promote local and sustainable companies in our first Green & Healthy Gift Guide. Send us your suggestions for locally-sourced food, skincare, eco-art, toys, clothing and other green-minded or health-promoting — or healthfully delicious! — goodies to info (at) mindfulhealthylife (dot) com by November 24 or reach out to us via Facebook.

Exercises to Heal Postpartum Muscular Imbalances

A woman’s body undergoes many changes during pregnancy that linger after baby arrives.  Muscular imbalances contribute to the random aches and pains that creep up postpartum.  Many of these pains can be traced back to pelvis misalignment.

In this guest post, personal trainer Sara Lewis of Mix Fitness in Northern Virginia shares some common postpartum alignment issues to be aware of and exercises to correct them. Read More

National Kids Yoga Conference returns in November

The second annual National Kids Yoga Conference returns to the George Washington University campus November 13-15. The conference “for adults bringing yoga to the next generation” aims to spread the word about the positive benefits of yoga and mindfulness for youth. The event will bring together dozens of inspiring speakers for keynote addresses and breakout sessions and will offer a marketplace of vendors offering services and products to support youth mindfulness education, training and practice.

Weston A. Price Foundation’s Sally Fallon Morell on Traditional Eating

Hearing Sally Fallon Morell‘s talk about traditional diets at the Weston A. Price Foundation‘s Wise Traditions conference was a turning point in my health, nutrition, and parenting journeys. Each year the organization headed by Fallon Morell brings together a thousand traditional foods enthusiasts to hear presentations about holistic health and wellness by speakers who are nationally recognized leaders in the field; to meet vendors and sample whole foods products; to eat delicious farm-fresh and locally-sourced meals — including bone broth on tap! — and to learn from one another. The large annual Wise Traditions conference moves to a different part of the country each year and will be in Anaheim, California November 13-16.

In addition to serving as the co-founder and president of the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) and the author of several books, Fallon Morell and her husband own P.A. Bowen Farmstead in Brandywine, Maryland, less than an hour from D.C. Available every Saturday morning by appointment are tours of the farm, which produces artisan cheese and raises grass-based livestock.

Earlier this year, I had the chance to talk with Morell in advance of a sold-out day-long seminar she gave in Maryland. Read More

Self-Regulation in the Digital World – A Necessary Balance (+ giveaway)

Our world is becoming increasingly digital.  Technology is integrated into all aspects of our lives and has transformed how we engage in most of our activities – work, play, communication, entertainment, shopping, recording, and creating of all kinds.  How is this daily, hourly use of digital technology affecting us and our children?

Leah Kalish of Move with Me Yoga Adventures shares her insights in this guest post.

TRUE Fitness Studio Launches Give Back Program for Moms in Need

When I spoke with Nina Elliot about her vision for expanding TRUE Health & Wholeness wellness studio, she was excited to tell me about the new TRUE Gives Back Program to offer fitness and wellness services to moms who otherwise couldn’t afford them.

The long-term vision for the business she co-owns with her husband, Christian, is to change people’s ideas about health. “You don’t transform your world until you transform your city, your block,” Nina said. She and Christian, parents of three with a fourth due in November, wanted to effect change among local Arlington-area residents. They came up with the Give Back Program to invite people in the facility who might not otherwise enter because of the cost of personal or group training and wellness services. Read More

Celebrate a Happy & Healthy Halloween with Teal Pumpkin and other tips (+ giveaway!)

As parents, we look forward to watching our children choose their Halloween costumes and map out the best neighborhood houses to visit for candy. However, for some parents Halloween can also bring anxiety if their children have food allergies or sensitivities. The Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) TEAL Pumpkin Project is working to reduce that anxiety for families with food-related allergies in the D.C. Metro Area and across the country.
